The Flussbad. A river pool in a part of the Spree

A innovative project called the Flussbad is under construction in a segment of a filthy canal, part of the River Spree, that flows around the tourist-mobbed Museum Island. The new river pool would add new wetlands and some ‘bath’ places where the people can literally dive into.

Clean pool by filtering the water of the canal in an ecological manner

The idea at the bottom of the Flussbad Berlin project is to filter the water entering the canal in an ecological manner and to have it flowing into a river pool further downstream. The Flussbad Berlin is located where the Spree Canal wraps around one side of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Museum Island, while the main Spree River go away on its own.

The Flussbad Berlin e.V., a non-profit organization, is planning a long swimming pool in the Spree Canal between Schlossplatz and the Bode Museum that will be open to the general public. A natural wetlands and a reed bed (aquatic plant based systems which allow bacteria, fungi and algae to digest the sewage and clean the water) to provide natural purification of the river water.

The project is base on environmental science studies and committed to a sustainable, integrative development of the urban environment. Flussbad Berlin is an initiative with origins back in the 90s and aims to revive the historic function of the river for the city, it represents a innovative, new imagining of what a metropolitan river can be.

An innovative project thinking at biotope under and over the water

Berlin could have a sparkling clean stretch of water where people can dive into every summer. We already thought at what Berliners creativity could do with a similar structure in town. Parties, happening, arts and what more. Bathers could have relax thank to the water’s edge, also paddle as also swim, lie down looking the amazing city around. While in cold winters, the strip would be open for ice skating and traditional markets full of wine and hot punch.

Flussbad Berlin also provides walking trails and bike paths that join the pool to the most important areas surrounding the city, and the creation of the Biotope of Berlin, a natural park with trees, native plants and animals. It’s sound amazing and innovative, we can’t wait to get into.
