A powerful message warning by Berlin Mayor
“We Berliners know best how much suffering was caused by the division of an entire continent with barbed wire and concrete”, he said in a statement, referring to Europe’s “Iron Curtain” division.
As Müller remembers in his memo, America supported Berlin during the Cold War, and U.S. President Ronald Regan called for the Berlin Wall to be torn down in 1987.
“Berlin — the city which stands for the separation of Europe as well as the freedom of Europe — cannot watch silently as another country plans to build a wall”, Berlin Mayor Michael Müller said in his statement, according to a translation by the Washington Post.
